 Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cold room?

A cold room is an insulated, temperature-controlled space used for chilled or frozen storage. A typical commercial cold room combines insulated panels, an insulated door, refrigeration equipment and a temperature controller.

What is the difference between a chiller room and a freezer room?

A chiller room keeps products refrigerated without freezing them, while a freezer room operates below freezing for frozen storage. Freezer rooms generally require greater insulation and equipment designed for lower operating temperatures.

What thickness of cold room panel do I need?

The correct panel thickness depends on the required temperature, ambient conditions and application. MES Cooling supplies PIR insulated panels in 80 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm thicknesses.

What is a PIR cold room panel?

PIR (polyisocyanurate) is a rigid thermal insulation material commonly used in cold room sandwich panels. It helps reduce heat transfer between the refrigerated space and the surrounding environment.

Should I choose a hinged or sliding cold room door?

Hinged doors are a practical choice for many standard access openings. Sliding doors can be better for larger openings, frequent movement of goods or areas where there is limited space for a door to swing.

What is the difference between a chiller door and a freezer door?

Freezer doors are designed for lower operating temperatures and generally require greater insulation. MES Cooling's range includes 68 mm insulated chiller doors and 92 mm insulated freezer doors, with heated seals available for freezer applications.

How do I choose the correct refrigeration unit for a cold room?

Selection depends on more than room size. Required temperature, ambient conditions, insulation, product load, product entering temperature, door usage and other heat loads should all be considered.

Can a cold room be monitored remotely?

Yes. With a compatible connected controller, functions such as remote temperature monitoring, data logging and fault notifications can be available. MES Cooling's FROSTAGE IoT controller provides Wi-Fi connectivity and remote monitoring functions.

Can I buy individual cold room components from MES Cooling?

Yes. MES Cooling supplies individual components including insulated panels, hinged and sliding doors, refrigeration equipment, controllers and accessories, as well as products for complete cold room projects.

Do you offer trade pricing?

Yes. MES Cooling works with refrigeration contractors, cold room installers, resellers and other commercial customers across the UK. Eligible businesses can apply for a trade account to access trade pricing.
