Mes Hinged Cold Room Doors

Hinged vs Sliding Cold Room Doors: Which Is Best?

Why is the cold room door important?

A cold room door is more than an entrance to a temperature-controlled space. It forms part of the insulated envelope of the room and needs to provide reliable access while helping to limit unwanted heat and air transfer.

Choosing the right door depends on the operating temperature, opening size, available space, frequency of use and the way people or goods will move through the opening.

Hinged cold room doors

Hinged doors are one of the most common choices for commercial cold rooms. They are simple to operate and particularly suitable for personnel access and standard-sized openings.

A hinged door normally requires clear space in front of the opening for the door leaf to swing. The opening direction should therefore be considered when planning the room layout.

MES Cooling supplies hinged doors for both chiller and freezer applications, with right-hand and left-hand opening configurations available.

Sliding cold room doors

Sliding doors move horizontally alongside the cold room wall rather than swinging outwards.

They can be particularly useful for larger openings, areas with frequent movement of goods, or locations where there is insufficient space for a conventional door swing.

Depending on the project, sliding doors may also provide more convenient access for trolleys and other material-handling operations.

Hinged or sliding: which should you choose?

For many standard personnel-access cold rooms, a hinged door provides a simple and practical solution.

A sliding door may be preferable where:

  • The opening is relatively large
  • Door swing would obstruct a working area
  • Goods frequently move through the opening
  • Trolleys or other handling equipment require convenient access
  • The room layout makes a hinged door impractical

The decision should be based on how the cold room will actually be used rather than appearance alone.

Chiller doors vs freezer doors

The operating temperature of the room also affects the door specification.

Freezer doors need to perform under lower-temperature conditions and generally require greater insulation than doors intended for chilled storage.

In the MES Cooling range, hinged chiller doors are specified with 68 mm insulation, while freezer doors are specified with 92 mm insulation.

Freezer applications can also require heated seals to help reduce problems associated with ice formation around the door seal.

Why are door seals important?

Every time a cold room door opens, warmer external air can enter the refrigerated space.

When the door is closed, the seals help limit further air exchange around the opening. Damaged, incorrectly adjusted or poorly fitted seals can therefore affect temperature stability and increase the load on the refrigeration system.

Regular inspection of the door gasket and closing mechanism should form part of routine cold room maintenance.

What size cold room door do I need?

Door size should be based on how the room will be accessed.

For personnel access, a standard-sized hinged door may be sufficient. Where larger products, pallets, trolleys or equipment need to pass through the opening, a larger hinged or sliding door may be more appropriate.

When requesting a quotation, it is useful to provide both the required opening dimensions and information about how the door will be used.

Right-hand or left-hand opening?

For hinged doors, handing determines which side the door is hinged on and the direction in which it opens.

This should be confirmed before ordering. Consider nearby walls, shelving, equipment, walkways and the normal direction of movement around the cold room.

If you are unsure, providing a simple drawing or photograph of the proposed opening can help avoid ordering the wrong configuration.

What should I provide when requesting a cold room door quotation?

Ideally, provide:

  • Chiller or freezer application
  • Required opening width and height
  • Hinged or sliding preference
  • Right or left handing for hinged doors
  • Wall or panel thickness
  • Required operating temperature
  • Quantity
  • Any particular finish or hardware requirements

For replacement doors, photographs and existing opening dimensions can also be helpful.
